Training aboard Asterix can include replenishment-at-sea procedures, flight deck coordination, cargo handling, mission bay setup, emergency response, communications planning, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief procedures, and autonomous vehicle support. Used deliberately, the ship can provide repeatable sea time for qualification currency, joint and allied exercises, and hands-on learning that cannot be fully replicated in a classroom.

Northern & Arctic Resupply Support

Canada’s northern operations place exceptional demands on logistics, distance, weather and infrastructure. CSS Asterix can complement RCN and Canadian Armed Forces Arctic activity as a seasonal resupply and sustainment platform where conditions permit and in coordination with appropriate northern, allied and ice-capable partners. The ship can help move stores, spare parts, fuel, water, vehicles, containers and mission equipment to staging areas that support exercises, domestic response and partner operations.

In Operation NANOOK-style activities and other northern training, Asterix could add practical capacity for ship-to-shore movement, replenishment planning, communications, medical support, embarked liaison teams and autonomous systems trials. This would strengthen Canada’s ability to rehearse northern logistics before a crisis, support presence in remote maritime approaches and give sailors practical experience in the realities of operating where distance and infrastructure are mission-critical factors.

Autonomous Vehicles and Drone Operations

The Project Drone Operations concept points to an important future role: using Asterix as a maritime autonomous systems support hub. With mission bays, workshops, containerized support spaces, communications-control areas and deck capacity, the ship can support the launch, recovery, transport, charging, maintenance and mission planning for uncrewed aircraft and autonomous surface vehicles. In exercises, humanitarian response rehearsals and northern operations, autonomous vehicles can expand maritime domain awareness, survey approaches, monitor environmental conditions, support search and rescue planning, and move data into the recognized maritime picture. Asterix gives the RCN a practical sea-based environment to train with these systems, test support concepts and integrate autonomous capabilities without taking combatants away from core tasks.
